Since April 26th, children under the age of 14 can go outside for an hour a day, following certain measures.

Using masks is not yet mandatory but highly recommended. Therefore, as there could be some shortage, today we are going to teach you how to create your own homemade masks for children following the specifications that the Ministry of Health establishes in its guidelines for the manufacture of masks and protective clothing

Materials required to create homemade masks

When it comes to making homemade masks, not any material will do. Whether they are for children or adults, the materials must be non-woven fabrics that do not contain elastic components.

This way, following the UNE guidelines to make hygienic non reusable masks for kids, you will need the following materials to create them at home:

To make the body of a five-layer hygienic mask, you need:

  • For the outside of the mask: 2 layers of 40g / m2 spunbond nonwoven; 100% hydrophobic polypropylene.
  • For the intermediate part of the mask: 2 layers of 44 g / m2 spunlace nonwoven; 80% polyester / 20% viscose.
  • For the inside of the mask: 1 layer of spunbond non-woven fabric of 20 g / m2; 100% hydrophobic polypropylene.

For caps and mask trims you will need 40 g / m2 spunbond non-woven fabrics; 100% hydrophobic polypropylene and a twist strip. And, a headband, tape or lanyard for the harnesses that hold the mask to your head.

When making children’s masks, there are three patterns that have been established with different measures depending on their age. Those who are between 3 to 5 years old will use the small size. From 6 to 9 years the medium size and from 10 to 12 years the large one.

Small size masks for kids – From 3 to 5 years old

In ages between 3 and 5 years, you will need to cut 5 layers of fabric with measures of 13 × 13 cm to make the body of the masks.

For the trims on both sides, the pieces must be cut to measure 5.5 cm high and 2.5 cm wide

The elastic cord or bands must have an extension of 10 cm.

Medium size masks for kids – From 6 to 9 years old

In ages between 6 and 9 years, you will need to cut 5 layers of fabric with measures of 15 × 15 cm to make the body of the masks.

For the two sides, you must cut pieces of 6.5 cm high and 2.5 cm wide.

The cord or bands made of elastic material must have an extension of 11 cm.

Large size masks for kids – From 10 to 12 years old

In ages between 10 and 12 years, you will need to cut 5 layers of fabric with measures of 17 × 17 cm to make the body of the masks.

For the trims on both sides, you must cut pieces of 8.5 cm high and 2.5 cm wide.

The cord or bands made of elastic material must have an extension of 12 cm.

Once you have all the materials properly cut according to your son’s age, the procedure is the same for all sizes of masks

First, having the 5 layers of fabric overlapping and in order, you have to make a 1.5 cm hem on the upper part of the mask body. Inside, place the twist strip and when you do it, make a 1-cm stitching, leaving 0.5 cm free.

Now, you have to make a hem on the lower edge of the body. In this case, you must do it 1 cm from the edge and a stitching at 0.5 cm

At this point, you would already have made the body of the mask. Depending on the size you are making, this should have the following measurements: 5.5 cm x 13 cm the small size, 6.5 cm x 15 cm the medium size and 8.5 cm x 17 cm the large size.

Now you only need to finish the sides and put the headgear on. For this, hold the two central folds with a stitching made 2 cm from the edge and with your elastic already cut, you just need to place the head harness in.

This is attached to the sides of the mask body by sewing the trims on each side, folding it in half and stitching, without folding it again and leaving the edges loose.

Make sure everything is well sewn and that’s it! You have your children’s mask ready! However, so that it doesn’t lose effectiveness, it must be placed and used correctly as indicated by the authorities
