How to properly iron a shirt

The shirt is usually a very elegant piece of clothing and is used daily to go to work in more serious and formal environments. In the office it is essential to give a good image, so we are going to give you some advice on the ironing and the process of how to iron a shirt so that it is completely smooth and without any wrinkles.

The shirt is one of the most used garments every day, especially to go to work in the office. That is why it is very important that it is perfectly ironed and without any wrinkles if you do not want to give a bad image to your colleagues and the heads of the company.

First tips: iron, shirt type and posture

The first thing to do is make sure that the iron is in good condition, since, if the tool is not in good condition, the result will probably be far from perfect. Therefore, check that the sole plate is clean to prevent the shirt from wearing out and getting dirty in the process.

There is no universal ironing technique that works for every shirt, so it is important to know the garment you are going to iron and the optimal temperature. Cotton is a material that withstands high temperatures very well, while polyester does not so much and you have to be especially careful with silk, which is one of the most delicate materials.

Another issue that must be taken into account during the ironing, especially if we have a lot of accumulated clothes, is the position. Always try to keep your back straight and your arms form a 90º angle to avoid back problems in the future.

How to iron the shirt: collars and cuffs

We start ironing by the most rigid areas, therefore, those that less wrinkles usually have: the neck and the fists. Stretch the shirt on the ironing board, removing the buttons in case the shirt has them (be careful not to apply too much heat on or very close to the buttons). Pass the iron from right to left several times and then do the same for the other side. The same with the outer and inner faces of the cuffs.

Once finished with these less delicate parts, now that you are on the side of the fists and, with the sleeves well stretched, pass the iron through them until you reach the area of the armpit. Try not to leave any marked line passing the iron as many times as you need.

The shoulders are easy to iron if you introduce them by the tip of the board (without exerting too much pressure so as not to ruin the shirt) and use it as the main point of support.

How to iron the shirt: back and front

To properly iron the back of the shirt, take advantage of the shape of the board and place the shirt open and upside down, with the neck at the tip. By doing this, the back is completely unfolded and it is much easier to pass the iron. Remember to always do it in the same direction.

It only remains to iron the front of the shirt, so we use the table again and put one of the halves, just the opposite to when ironing the back, with the neck on the peak of the table, but this time, facing upwards.

The movement with the iron, both on the front and back, should be quick and never keep it for a long time, since they are the most sensitive areas and you can end up burning or damaging the shirt.

Once the ironing is finished, the folding of the shirt is also very important, because if it is not done well, you can ruin everything you have done previously. It is best to hang it with only the first button fastened. This way you avoid wrinkling again.

Following these tips, you will have your shirts perfectly ironed and without any wrinkles for when you need them, whether to go to work at the office, a more formal dinner or a special occasion such as a baptism or a wedding.
